Friday 17 July – Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC)hosted its annual Business at the Malvina House Hotel, offering both higher and further education students and apprentices an opportunity to explore interests and future careers with industry professionals.
In collaboration with the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) Careers Department, the Business Breakfast saw 35 professionals in attendance, all of whom supported and shared experiences with 17 students and two (2) apprentices.
The industries surrounding the event for this year consisted of education, psychology, journalism, engineering, conservation and fisheries, IT and cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), medicine, law, healthcare, aviation, agriculture and biosecurity.
“The Business Breakfast is a tailored pairing of students and industry professionals. FIDC designs a table of business representatives, sometimes making up the whole of that industry in the Falkland Islands, around students who have expressed an interest in that industry,” said Zachary Franklin, managing director for FIDC. “If you are a student, this is an opportunity to engage with professionals and industry leaders to learn more about what they need. If you are in business, this is an opportunity to see who is about to enter the workforce.”
The Business Breakfast is one of several programmes run by FIDC throughout the financial year as part of the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES!), which was established in 2016. YES! is aimed at the younger generation and wider community of the Falkland Islands to foster career opportunities, while also helps in developing the business capacity within the Falkland Islands.
Following the conclusion of this year’s Business Breakfast, FIDC will look to host the event again next year.
“The business community responds well to meeting students interested in their respective industries, and the students walk away much more informed by networking in this manner,” said Franklin. “Inevitably, one of the outcomes of the Business Breakfast is always one or two students ends up being offered employment. It is always fantastic to see that kind of outcome.”
