The new pilot project from FIDC will implement artificial intelligence within the Corporation and lay out business case for Falkland Islands business community.
The Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC) is undertaking an artificial intelligence (AI) trial project with support from Adapto South Atlantic to explore how AI can support local organisations, improve productivity, and add efficiencies to everyday work.
As part of this work, FIDC is inviting local businesses and organisations to complete the “AI Use in Falklands Organisations 2026 Survey” to share views on current awareness, potential uses, barriers, and support needs around AI. The survey can be accessed by clicking HERE.
The trial project – dubbed Project T-1000 – will focus on practical uses within FIDC, including document search, enquiry handling, routine administration, data analysis, and business-support services.
“Alongside exploring potential benefits, the AI trial will also examine the responsibilities that come with adapting new technology,” said Sam Cockwell, strategic projects manager for FIDC. “Areas such as data protection, cybersecurity, accuracy, transparency, and human oversight will be vital to the project. Any activity will take place within a controlled framework, ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place and that AI is used to support, rather than replace informed human decision making.”
The work will help FIDC understand where AI can offer real value in the Falkland Islands’ unique operating environment, where specialist capacity, long supply chains, and reliable access to information are especially important. By testing a small number of controlled pilots internally, FIDC will look to identify opportunities to save time, reduce repetitive tasks, and improve access to information, while also building the confidence in how emerging technologies can be used locally. The findings will help shape future guidance for organisations that are considering implementing AI.
“By taking an evidence-based approach, FIDC aims to develop a realistic picture of where investment in AI could deliver measurable benefits and where other solutions could be more appropriate,” said Jamie Webb, specialist projects intern, who is leading on the initiative.
In addition to the internal work, a key component of the project will be working with local stakeholders to understand their needs and identify where AI could provide meaningful support. In some cases, the answer may not be AI at all, but improvements to existing processes.
Project T-1000 is intended to support the Falkland Islands long-term economic development by encouraging innovation while taking a practical and responsible approach to emerging technology. FIDC is hoping the knowledge gained through the trial will help inform future guidance, build local digital capability, and provide organisations with the confidence to make informed decisions about AI.
FIDC anticipates publishing the first phase of its report on Project T-1000 at the next FIDC Board meeting (September 2026).
