Farmers Week 2025: Standing with the Falkland Islands Rural and Farming Community

Farmers Week 2025 was a vibrant and inspiring celebration of the Falkland Islands’ agricultural and rural sector, bringing together producers, businesses, and organisations that form the backbone of the local economy. The Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC) was proud to be at the heart of the week’s activities, from participating in the Rural Business Association Expo to hosting a guided tour of the newly refurbished Wool Warehouse. Throughout the week, FIDC championed innovation, connection, and long-term growth across the sector, while maintaining a strong presence at every major session and event.

As part of FIDC’s contribution to the week, FIDC Managing Director Zachary Franklin delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining key insights from its recent work and the direction ahead.

Opening the session, Mr. Franklin set the tone for a discussion that centred on supporting rural enterprise, responding to real challenges, and encouraging innovation across the Islands. He began by revisiting FIDC’s role as the national economic development agency for over 40 years, and outlined its mission to foster commercial growth through strategic partnerships with government and the private sector.

A key focus of the presentation was the 2025 Business Climate Survey (BCS), specifically those responses on the rural economy. The findings painted a clear picture of the hurdles facing rural businesses. Common challenges included limited telecommunications quality, restricted air links to South America, and ongoing difficulties with labour shortages and accommodation. Businesses also expressed frustration with the lack of advance shipping schedules and the high cost and low availability of air travel, which continue to limit tourism and trade opportunities.

Despite these barriers, rural businesses are showing a clear appetite for innovation. The survey revealed that many are actively exploring ways to become more sustainable and improve their products and services. However, concerns remain around the perceived awareness of rural issues within central government. Respondents rated both FIG departments and the Legislative Assembly with an average score of just 5 out of 10 when asked how well rural perspectives were understood. When asked how adequately rural communities are consulted in policymaking, most responses hovered in the mid-range, suggesting room for greater engagement and dialogue.

The presentation also updated attendees on several key FIDC initiatives. One of the week’s highlights was the Wool Warehouse tour, held on the 30th of June, showcasing the progress made on remedial works. FIDC also highlighted the recent launch of Falklands IT in partnership with Cambridge Management Consulting, offering managed IT and professional services across the Islands. Further, at Hillside Business Park, 15 cabin renovations have been completed, and 14 tenants are now operating out of the space, reflecting steady commercial growth.

The presentation spotlighted several upcoming events and programmes. These include a business delegation trip to Chile from the 30th August – 6th September to attend Hyvolution Chile 2025, with financial support available from FIDC. Additionally, working with the Falklands Shearing Committee, supporting the development of an international shearing test competition in November 2025, which will welcome teams from Wales, Chile, and the Falkland Islands. Planning is also underway for the 2026 Economic Development Forum, which will cover critical issues such as hydrocarbons, telecommunications, and environmental sustainability.

Beyond infrastructure and events, FIDC’s ongoing commitment to training, youth enterprise, and rural support was also emphasised. In the past year alone, FIDC has delivered programmes such as the Harrison-Moody Training, the “Building Blocks for Business” workshop, and a range of initiatives under the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES!).

Throughout 2025, FIDC has undertaken multiple visits to both East and West Falklands, holding in-person meetings and workshops at Hill Cove and Fox Bay. These visits help us stay in touch with local realities and ensure that support, whether financial, advisory, or practical, is responsive and relevant. FIDC’s full range of loans, grants, and funding packages are designed to meet the varied needs of businesses across the Islands, with tailored support for green initiatives, training, marketing, and professional services.

Farmers Week 2025 was more than a showcase, it was a reaffirmation of FIDC’s collective commitment to rural development. FIDC remains proud to walk alongside farmers and rural businesses as they continue to innovate, overcome challenges, and build a stronger future. Mr. Franklin closed the presentation with a clear message:

“FIDC is here to help, whether through planning advice, financial guidance, or simply by being a partner that listens. We look forward to continuing this work in the months and years ahead.”
