Beef Suppliers Show Up for Walker Creek Demonstrations

Braving cold weather conditions, beef suppliers from around the Falkland Islands attended several outdoor sessions from Falklands Landholdings Corporation.

23 July 2026 – Practical demonstrations, insights from the Falkland Islands Government Department of Agriculture (FIG DOA), and producer conversations were on display at Walker Creek recently after the Beef Suppliers Working Group (BSWG) hosted a Beef Growers Day for suppliers from around the Falkland Islands.

About 25 individuals from several Falkland Islands farms endured the snowy conditions to see the finishing system used by Falklands Landholdings Corporation (FLH) at its Walker Creek Farm, as well as cattle weighing and body conditioning practices from FLH farm managers.

The latest BSWG Beef Growers Day at Walker Creek Farm is another instance of the beef suppliers engaging with DOA advisors, and more importantly, management of Falkland Islands Meat Company (FIMCO), the only abattoir in the Falkland Islands.

Part of the practical demonstrations included farmers seeing the strip grazing method implemented by Walker Creek Farm, which is a controlled grazing method where cattle are given access to a small, defined section of pasture at a time, and, in turn, improves forage utilization and pasture health.

“In the past, people did do a lot of crop to finish cattle, and what we’ve seen is the repercussions of that, which is that it is quite hard to manage,” said Olivia Woodiwiss, agricultural advisor at FIG DOA, and chair of the BSWG. “It takes a lot of fertilizer, a lot of inputs, and a lot of time.”

The BSWG is mandated to engage with beef suppliers across the islands and ensure FIMCO is proactively working and communicating with beef suppliers to address shortfalls in production levels. Previously, the BSWG has advised on changes to the national beef pricing grid, revised supplier contracts, and actively supporting the launch of FIMCO’s online supplier portal.
