FIDC Represents Falkland Islands at Global Islands Forum

Businesses in the Falkland Islands and their adoption of renewable technologies were at the heart of conversation during a panel discussion featuring Zachary Franklin, Managing Director of the Falkland Islands Development Corporation, in Prince Edward Island, Canada, in May 2024.

Speaking at the Global Sustainable Islands Summit 2024 by island network group Island Innovation, Franklin was part of the “Renewable Energy and Financing” panel, which focused on addressing the latest advancements in renewable energy technologies, financing mechanisms, and policy frameworks conducive to island-specific contexts.

Franklin used the opportunity to highlight FIDC’s financial packages and schemes, informing the audience, “Over the last year, FIDC has rolled out its Green Business Programme, a £750,000 suite of financial incentives financed by the Falkland Islands government, which is meant to encourage the private sector of the Falkland Islands to focus on environmental and sustainable initiatives when starting up and expanding.”

Other speakers at the Global Sustainable Islands Summit 2024 included Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts & Nevis; Mike Eman, former Prime Minister of Aruba; Dennis King, Premier of Prince Edward Island; and Steven Myers, Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Action, Prince Edward Island Government.

The Global Sustainable Islands Summit 2024 in Prince Edward Island, Canada, saw approximately 400 attendees, and brought together professionals, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss and explore innovative solutions and advancements in sustainable energy, with a focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
